As an FBI Special Agent with a cyber and IT background, you can help combat cybercrime and protect national security

The work of FBI Special Agents draws heavily from their skillset and professional background daily. The Bureau's operations rely on the fact that technology permeates nearly everything they do, and as such, FBI Agents come from varying IT backgrounds including network information specialists, cybersecurity experts, computer scientists, digital forensic analysts, and more. Due to national security concerns, the Bureau strives to work hand-in-hand with professionals with software engineering, network security, and computer science specialties given their impeccable ability to neutralize cybersecurity threats such as cybercrimes, data theft, ransomware, among other risks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • It is imperative to maintain high levels of integrity in one's actions.
  • To acquire a Top Secret Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Clearance, you will need to go through extensive scrutiny, such as background checks, credit assessments, and a polygraph examination.
  • Achieve all fitness requirements; optimal physical fitness is crucial to successfully completing training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA and maintaining it as a priority during your professional life.
  • Meet the medical standards and perform a battery of hearing and vision assessments to satisfy the examination's stringent requirements.
  • Attend the FBI Academy in Quantico and train as a Special Agent for around 19 weeks in order to become fully employed.
  • Once FBI Academy training is complete, Special Agents should be open to transferring to any of the FBI's 56 Field Offices or remote resident agencies, including San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is unlikely for Special Agents to return to their original processing office.
  • Be willing to accept temporary work opportunities that may arise in any part of the world, regardless of how long or short-term they may be.
  • The workload requirement for this job is a minimum of 50 hours per week, with on-call duties round-the-clock seven days a week, including holidays.
  • A willingness to participate in arrests, execute search warrants, raids, and other allied tasks, accompanied by the required skills and abilities.

Apart from fulfilling other eligibility requirements, those aspiring to become Special Agents must undergo the Special Agent Selection System (SASS), which consists of demanding physical and mental tests. The objective is to identify only the most capable and competent applicants. The selection process usually takes a year or longer to complete.

Key Requirments:

You must:

  • Obtain citizenship within the jurisdiction of the United States.
  • To qualify, the individual must be in the age range of 23 to 37 during their appointment.
  • Meet the requirements necessary to obtain a Top Secret SCI Clearance and access restricted information.
  • Unless excused under the work experience waiver, applicants should have worked full-time in their professional capacity for at least four years, with no significant gaps or inconsistencies.
  • To become a part of the FBI team, candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements. This encompasses the ability to obtain clearances, adhere to compulsory training, possess academic credentials, and have a track record of sound character.
  • In order to qualify, applicants must have a valid driver's license and at least six months of driving experience.

Education Qualifications:

  • To be considered for this position, candidates must have received a bachelor's degree or higher education from a U.S.-accredited college or university, with a preference for individuals who majored in computer science, engineering, data science, information technology or similar fields.

Meeting the requirement for a recognized degree involves obtaining it from an accredited collegiate institution and presenting a corresponding official transcript.
