Responsibilities are diverse, ranging from diagnosing animal needs to conducting assessments, providing support during medical procedures, administering nursing care, managing patient well-being, monitoring medical supplies and equipment, facilitating patient admissions and discharges, and maintaining comprehensive medical records with utmost accuracy and detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Animal care providers and veterinarians will utilize an array of resources to better understand the needs of the animal, such as diagnostics tests, to obtain a complete understanding of their physical and emotional health.
  • The monitoring of vital signs, tending to wounds, administering medication and vaccines, and collecting samples are critical aspects of providing healthcare.
  • Facilitate veterinary exams and procedures by organizing materials, attending to pets with compassion, and adhering to the instructions and guidelines set by the veterinarian. Administer exceptional animal care with detailed knowledge regarding anatomy, physiology, drug administration, equipment handling, and illness.
  • Sourcing and validating medications are managed by a designated team to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • A key aspect of ensuring quality patient care is to provide regular feeding, thorough cleaning, and ongoing observation to detect and respond to any potential health concerns.
  • Accurately furnish and record medications, which may include controlled substances.
  • Guarantee a law-abiding, safe, and sanitized environment by sterilizing equipment, sanitizing spaces, and complying with legal requirements.
  • The significance of keeping thorough medical records in a timely fashion cannot be overstated and can greatly benefit both patients and medical professionals.
  • Follow guidelines to communicate with pet parents about their pet's condition.
  • Keep equipment in proper working order and replenish supplies as necessary.

Assignment to the specialty medical areas listed below may require the following job functions:

Cardiology:

  • Procure and deliver laboratory samples.
  • Identifying various heart problems and abnormal heart rhythms.
  • Upgrade and perfect instruments for monitoring blood vessel and heart pressures.
  • Comprehend pacemaker fundamentals.

Dentistry:

  • Undertake tasks relating to dental hygiene such as cleaning, polishing, and performing intraoral x-rays.
  • Administer nerve blocks.
  • During oral surgeries, the assistant may be required to assist the dentist with surgical instruments and providing suction as needed.

Dermatology:

  • Deliver drugs via a variety of pathways.
  • Give gentle sanitary care and minor irrigation to patients with ear concerns.
  • Collect specimens from the skin and ear for laboratory testing.
  • The task of providing anesthesia and overseeing its impact falls under the purview of healthcare experts.
  • Insert intravenous catheters.

Emergency:

  • Observing critical indications, introducing catheters, and performing radiological diagnoses.
  • Undertaking wound cleansing and bandaging procedures.
  • Give shots and collect blood specimens.

Imaging:

  • Offer assistance in the application of diagnostic methods such as digital radiography and ultrasound.

Integrative:

  • Utilize record-keeping methods to follow the progress of integrative care outcomes.

Internal Medicine:

  • The area of preventive medicine involves identifying and implementing measures to reduce the onset of illness.

Neurology:

  • Aid in technical tasks such as aiding in anesthesia, placing intravenous catheters, and performing EMG tests.

Oncology:

  • Our focus is on providing aid to pets through diagnosis, treatment, and kindhearted care.
  • Educating owners about chemotherapy can help them make informed decisions about their pet's care, and it can provide them with the knowledge and tools they need to support their animal during treatment.

Ophthalmology:

  • Indicate your care for veterans by joining them during their optical examinations and diagnostic procedures.

Radiology:

  • Provide assistance with diagnostic imaging for an array of illnesses and injuries.

Surgery:

  • Offer assistance in surgical procedures by preparing pets, participating in surgeries, and managing equipment.

Qualifications:

  • The acquisition of high school diploma or GED is an essential requirement to pursue a higher level of education.
  • Boasts over two years of experience in veterinary appointment management, surgical intervention, and nursing care provision for patients in critical care settings.
  • Candidates are advised to maintain an up-to-date certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT), as the position may require it depending on the state.
  • Education, certification, training, and/or experience can be considered in combination for equivalence.

Position Requirements:

  • It is of prime importance to develop efficient ways of managing pets before, during and after surgery. This involves preparing them in advance, keeping a watchful eye during the process and providing proper aftercare.
  • Expertise in performing tasks such as catheterization, phlebotomy, emergency management, and digital imaging while complying with established protocols.
  • The ability to securely restrain animals according to established industry standards is another vital skill that animal handlers need to have to ensure the safety of themselves and the animals.
  • Assisting in the dispensing of drugs and closely monitoring the use of sedatives under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian.
  • Being at ease when working with unwell animals, risky chemicals, cleansing agents, gas sedatives, and unpalatable smells.
  • By showing empathy towards your pet, you can ensure that they feel understood and that their physical and emotional well-being is being prioritized and addressed.
  • Approaching work duties in a responsible and professional manner, and keeping communication that is clear and effective.
  • Having the option for a schedule that allows work on weekends and holidays through versatile scheduling.
  • Routine activities involve frequent handling of objects, maintaining cleanliness, and continuous physical activity.
  • Workspace tasks can vary depending on the assignment and may require extended periods of being seated or standing while engaging in physical activities like climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crawling.
  • Some tasks may require moderate physical activity, such as being able to lift animals weighing up to 50 pounds. Additionally, answering phone calls and assisting with different hospital duties is expected.
