Typical activities include:

  • Diligent and sustained covert surveillance is critical to the early detection and deterrence of undocumented noncitizens and those engaged in the smuggling of noncitizens.
  • Responding to electronic sensor alerts; interpreting and following marks, imprints, and other physical trails; deploying infrared scopes during nocturnal assignments.
  • Reacting to planes spotted in the area and conducting other activities to prevent smuggling, such as examining agricultural and ranch properties, monitoring roadways, patrolling cities, and performing transportation checks.
  • The USBP's primary focus is on monitoring and securing the nation's border and coastal territories, and to do so, they take advantage of assorted Government assets, including motor vehicles, watercraft, and snowmobiles.
  • Operational needs dictate that travel is required sporadically.

Duty Locations:

The agency selects the work location according to its requirements. Job offers are made based on the operational needs and specifications of the U.S. Border Patrol. While many duty locations may be available, the final offer letter may designate any site within the region.

The GL-5 grade level is available to individuals who meet any of the following qualifications:

Under certain circumstances, a combination of relevant academic coursework and experience may be substituted for the educational or work experience requirements specified in the announcement

Combining Experience with Education: Bringing together your valuable work experience and successful college education. The selection process involves assessing your resume and official or unofficial academic transcripts.

To be considered for the GL-7 grade level, you must have one of the qualifications listed below:

Responsibilities: As a law enforcement professional, you will be responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws and regulations, investigating crimes, responding to emergencies, and providing support and assistance to individuals in need. You will also be responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment for all members of the community

Education Substitution Clause: To qualify for this opening, applicants can exhibit their educational suitability by having a bachelor's degree that displays exceptional academic accomplishments, either due to one's class rank, possessing a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or membership in an honor society. Another method of meeting the educational prerequisites is by demonstrating that one will complete their bachelor's degree program with Superior Academic Achievement. Candidates can also satisfy the educational standards by substituting one year of graduate-level education completed at an accredited academic institution in a field of study related to law enforcement. Programs of study that will fulfill the criteria include criminal justice, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, forensic psychology, or corrections and rehabilitation. This graduate-level education must have been completed within 9 months before the announcement's closing date

Assessing Skills and Expertise: A thorough review of the candidate's expertise and work experience will be conducted by the employer. The applicant's resume and official transcripts will be scrutinized to gauge their abilities to meet the job requirements.

Those who have had experience in law enforcement or military law enforcement may be able to qualify for the GL-9 grade level:

In order to be considered for this job, you need to have one year of specialized work experience at a level equal to the next lower grade. This experience should demonstrate your capability to enforce local, state, and/or federal laws and regulations in a law enforcement capacity and have the authority or ability to do duties such as planning and conducting investigations, arresting criminals, serving warrants, using firearms, and communicating with people effectively.

No other type of education can replace this grade level.

Other Requirements:

The eligibility criteria for this job demands the applicants to be citizens of the United States.

Meeting the criteria for residency mandates that you have maintained your primary residence in the United States (including protectorates recognized as such by international law) for a minimum of three of the past five years.

To be considered for the Border Patrol Agent position, candidates must not have turned 40 at the time of referral in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03.

Veterans Preference: An excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) may be available for those eligible for Veterans Preference, regardless of age.
